Iran earthquake reportedly kills 370 A massive earthquake shook central Iran on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 killing at least 370 people and injuring hundreds more. The 6.4-magnitude quake struck at 5:55 a.m. local time, and was centered on the outskirts of Zarand. The town is about 56 kilometers northwest of Kerman, the capital of Kerman province. It damaged at least 40 villages, with a population of about 30,000 people, causing many buildings to crumble. The worst hit villages included Hotkan, Khanook, Motaharabad and Islamabad. The Iranian Red Crescent says it does not need outside aid. The earthquake occurred 250 kilometers from the city of Bam, which was devastated by an earthquake in 2003. That quake killed between 26,000 and 31,000 people. Iran, which is crisscrossed by several fault lines, is on the world's most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
